Whenever a major awards ceremony draws close, one notices a demand for introducing of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and fill the passions of fans with niche passions.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked completely in 2014
- Another creative title received no nominations that year
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
- Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
