Caelan Doris Included in Irish Squad While McCarthy Omitted

Rugby team selection update

Returning head coach the Ireland coach has named skipper Doris in his Ireland team for the fall matches, however Joe McCarthy has been excluded.

The captain, absent from play since having a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be fit to face New Zealand in Chicago on November 1.

Second row McCarthy, however, was not considered after not recovering from the foot injury he sustained during the first Lions match against the Wallabies in the summer.

Northern province player Izuchukwu and southern province wing Calvin Nash also miss out because of injury, while full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after having a hip operation following the summer tour.

Dublin province forward McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole new member in the 34-player group, but the Irish Rugby Football Union states new provincial pair Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped Connacht winger Shayne Bolton will head to Chicago as "cover".

After playing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their 2016 encounter, Ireland host Japan, Australia and world title holders the Springboks in Dublin.

"It's an exciting group to the squad and it's a chance for the more experienced players and for the newcomers on the recent tour to Georgia and the Lobos," said the coach, who returns to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to lead the British and Irish Lions to Australia.

In a largely experienced selection, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will again vie for the starting number 10 spot. The number 10 jersey is still available, with the two players poised to face off for the first occasion in Saturday's United Rugby Championship game at the Dublin venue.

Frawley is the third number 10 selected with Farrell deciding not to calling up the province's Byrne.

At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has selected Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer Test victories over Georgia and the Lobos. There is also a recall for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to teammate Ben Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey represent an veteran cohort of midfield choices. Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, but the youngster is also a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at number 15.

Wingers Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. The winger shone on his national team debut during the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over Georgia and the Lobos.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole new addition in the Irish pack. The loose-head prop has been in a couple of Leinster's URC United Rugby Championship matches this season and featured in Ireland A's defeat by the English in the English city earlier this year.

McCarthy was selected in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not earn a cap.

Southern province second row Thomas Ahern, who received his first two caps in those Tests, is retained, while experienced Northern province second row Henderson returns after missing the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests over the summer, is poised to deputise for Doris if the captain fails to recover fitness in time to face the All Blacks.

The Ireland squad will assemble in Dublin on the start of the week before flying to the US on the following day.
